A few hundred metres from the cross the road turns a corner and the island fills the view. The Illa del Portitxol is about 300 m across, once farmed and even lived on, and the strait between it and the shore was a natural anchorage in Roman times; the seabed around it is an underwater archaeological site and the island is being declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
This is the postcard of Jávea, the one you have already seen before you arrive. Below you are the white fishermen's cottages of Cala Barraca, in front the island, and beyond it the open sea. Our kayak and snorkel tours cross this strait; from the water the island looks bigger still.
